Overworked? Overwhelmed? The leading causes of death in developed countries - cancer and heart disease, stem from tension. According to Science Daily new research has produced strong evidence of how work stress is linked to the biological mechanisms involved in the onset of heart disease. We all need to take time out to reduce our stress levels and rejuvenate ourselves. Some of the best ways to overcome stress are:
1) Practice Yoga – A yoga class - even if it’s only once a week - at your local studio, will provide you the many benefits of taking time to rejuvenate yourself. The conscious breathing and meditative environment will help to reduce your stress level. And a good understanding of the eight limbs of yoga will strengthen your understanding of yourself and your reactions to the stressful circumstances.
2) Practice Meditation – Take five minutes a day to sit alone, clear your mind and focus on your breath. Learning to observe your thoughts can open a whole new level of freedom for you. You can experience the benefit of meditation no matter where you are – in the office, on an airplane, even in your daily commute. Practicing non-judgmental, moment to moment awareness can transform the way you handle workday stresses. Turn the stress of a traffic jam into a meditation session by closing your eyes and following your breath or repeating a soothing mantra.
3) Practice Mindfulness – If you’re too busy to stop for meals or find that you eat most of your meals on the run, make time once a day eat a meal with mindfulness. Take a few breaths before you begin eating. Eat more slowly observing the taste of the food and avoid distractions such as television or reading while you eat. This will help you to become more conscious of your need to focus on nourishing and caring for your body.
4) Listen and Relax - Listening to inspirational and stress reduction CDs at home or in your car can help to reduce stress. Instead of listening to the morning news at home or while commuting to work, explore the insights of Pema Chodron, Thich Nhat Hahn, Deepak Chopra or Wayne Dyer. You’ll be amazed at the change in your outlook at the beginning of your day. Try listening to soothing music on the way home to help to reduce the stress of the workday.
5) Snack Smarter – Avoid the highs and lows associated with sugar and caffeine. Instead, of eating cookies or candy from your local vending machine, stock up on packs of nuts or high protein snacks. And instead of reaching for that afternoon coffee boost, opt for soothing teas such as Chamomile, Breathe Deep or Kava Stress Relief.
