Mudras and Your Health

Let us briefly repeat our disclaimer that this content on mudras is in no way intended to replace the advice or recommendations of a physician. If you are using mudras as a form of self-healing then it may take an undetermined period of time before you notice results.

Then again, you might notice a change in as little as ten minutes. Every person is different. Think about how your asana practice evolves and changes your body slowly and over time. Most mudras are held for a period of five to fifteen minutes (which may work perfectly with a meditation practice.)

The Indian mudra researcher Acharya Keshav Dev believes mudras can help cure many diseases. He recommends holding one mudra per day for 45 minutes (or three periods of 15 minutes each). According to Keshav Dev, the practice and science of Mudras is Tatva yoga, or yoga based on science of elements. In the Times of India, Keshav Dev remarks, “The human body is a miniature form of the universe…. Mudras reveal the truth about nature, and contribute to the multifaceted development of the human personality, thereby awakening human tendencies which are otherwise dormant. The science of mudras is one of the finest gifts of yoga to the cause of human welfare."
